Q I) Why choose ESP over Bag Filter ?

Annualized cost comparison would help us to justify ESP as a better buy over Bag house
1) As one can see in the Bar graph, in the very first year Total annualized cost of Baghouse is higher than the ESP ie Alstom ESP, Thermax ESP etc.

Assumptions as per Indian condition

1) Depreciation taken as per straight line method (SLM) over a period of 5 years.

2) The bar represents Total annual cost which is :- Depreciation + Interest cost + Total operating cost.

3) Total operating cost includes :- Cost of power + Maintenance cost + Consumables.

4) The cost of Bag replacement for bag assumed once in 2 year.

5) The above data holds true for 6 and above 6TPH boiler only.

Q II) Why is the power cost higher in Baghouse?

ESP like Alstom ESP, Thermax ESP meeting the same emission standards requires substantially less energy consumption during operation than bag houses because Baghouse requires 3 times the energy to pull the flue gases through the fabric filters. Required
ID power is 25% higher. Where as, in an ESP ID power does not increase.

Q III) Why is the maintenance and consumable cost higher in Bag house?

I) Baghouse uses compressed air which leads to frequent mechanical maintenance of solenoid valves.

II) Performance of bags in Baghouse deteriorates over a period of 15 months. The cost of replacement of bags is one of
the high cost component in Baghouse.

Q IV) What would be a better buy if the boiler capacity is less than 6TPH and why?

Depending on the fuel used, Baghouse would be a better buy if your boiler capacity is less than 6TPH because increase in
power consumption is relatively low to justify the lower capital cost.

Q V) Is ESP safe, as the voltage is very high?

As the voltage involved is high one has to take care while entering the inspection area. One must switch off the power
during any inspection or maintenance.

Q VI) what are the cleaning efficiency achieved by various dust cleaning systems?

The graph below shows the cleaning efficiency of various dust cleaning systems
